The end of the school year can be such a whirlwind for special education teachers. As you’re wrapping up those end of school year tasks, here are a few things you can knock out to alleviate that beginning of the school year stress. These are all end of school year tasks that you can easily delegate to a paraprofessional. Let’s dive in!
Assign returning students a color and take inventory
As special education teachers, you often keep the same students year to year OR you know your caseload ahead of time. Since most things in my classroom are color coded, I like to pre assign students their colors for the next school year. This let’s me start taking inventory of things I might need for that color come next school year. Things like binders, folders, pencil boxes, etc. It’s good to know this information ahead of time so that if/when parents ask you for a supply list, you can give them certain colors to look for. I know not all parents are willing to buy specific colors, but in my experience, many are!
Prep Morning Binders
Morning binders are an integral part of our morning meeting. I love the ones from You Aut-a Know because they come with 3 different print and go levels for each month for the entire school year. This is something you can prepare now for those returning students. You know what levels your current students are at and you can choose morning work that will suit their level now. One less thing to do in August. This is something I would still prep ahead of time even if I didn’t know my caseload. I would simply make a few of each level ahead of time.
Prep Communication Folders
These are such an easy thing to set up now. I have always used these communication sheets from Especially Education and I love them! I usually make hundreds of copies printed on front and back and hole punch them ahead of time so that they can fit right into folders and binders. I’d delegate a paraprofessional to go ahead and create individual communication folders now.
Print Data Sheets
Chances are you have already written IEP goals that are going to be in effect at the start of back to school season. Might as well prep your data system now. Which includes printing your data sheets to organize into folders or creating your data forms depending on if you take paper or digital data.
Organize Data Bins
Another part of your data system you can get into place now. You can assign one bin per student and keep all their IEP goal related items in there. When you want to collect data, you can pull the bin and have all the materials you need ready to go. Make a list of what IEP materials you’re lacking so that you can have that list ready to go to revisit in the fall!
I hope this list was was helpful and not overwhelming! Again, utilize your paras for some of these end of school year tasks. These are all great things to delegate now to alleviate your back to school season.
